Passing Through
My early work was metaphorical in content but rooted in realism. Recently I've been fascinated by texture. To explore the realm of enriched surfaces, I had to forget all that I knew, breaking with realism to choose subjects more for form than content. A few works are totally abstract, some more figurative. To create space I also added the grid, with forms behind, in front, and caught, like fish, in the mesh. I apply texture and underpainting to add vitality.
I was inspired by the tide pools and forests around Monterey Bay, their colors, energy, and variety of textures: rough, gritty, wet and sleek. Yet these are not paintings of tide pools, but rather of elements associated with natural forms.
With this excursion into the abstract, I've lost the fear of breaking with the past.
